Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm: Puerto Princesa Correctional Facility or Penal Colony

One of the famous stops in Puerto Princesa Palawan is the Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm were prisoners are free roaming as they exercise or do field works.

We arrived there already in the late afternoon so most prisoners have returned to their cells.

It is a big facility.  There are different structures and farm lands.

Since they have many visitors, there is also the Souvenir Shop a their Recreation Hall.

We checked it out a bit.

There are selling the usual souvenirs like wood craft, trinkets and there are also unique items like the prisoner uniforms.  We found the items too pricey so we didn't buy anything though.

Commodore N. Hernandez (Ret.) Mansion: Our Puerto Princesa City Tour (Urban Tour) Seventh Stop

Although not in the usual Puerto Princesa City Tour or Urban Tour itinerary, we dropped by Commodore N. Hernandez (Ret.) Mansion which we only saw on some blogs.

commodore hernandez mansion
It turns out that it is a private property and not open to public anymore as Commodore N. Hernandez (Ret.) is currently living there.  But, since we were already there we asked the nice Commodore who was having his breakfast if we could briefly come in to take a picture.  He was not only friendly, he was very simple and accomodating too while he was enjoying what appears to be pandesal and coffee.

So here's his nice place with a pool too.

I bet its a dream house for residents in the area.

Palawan Butterfly Garden or Butterfly Sanctuary: Our Puerto Princesa City Tour (Urban Tour) Sixth Stop

We encountered a bit of a drizzle during our visit at Palawan Butterfly Garden or Butterfly Sanctuary.

palawan butterfly garden
We paid the entrance fee of 25 php and was allowed to go in.

There was a table with butterfly souvenirs along the way.

We were happy to see a garden with a bug net on top.  This got Travel Tripster Kurt and I excited to shoot for butterflies.

There was also a glass caged Palawan Peacock but they were hiding so we weren't able to capture a photo of them.

I always appreciate bridges like these and I have no idea why.

There's also a tunnel part.

The place was quite spacious which wasn't apparent from the outside.

We explored it a bit. Then Kurt begun taking photos of butterflies and showing me how great they are so I'd be challenged.  Just to level the playing field, he had a better camera and a better lens.

This was my shot.

 And, this is his.

These are his beautiful shots too.

I caught this one and look at the nice brown and orange color pattern.

Overall, we Travel Tripsters found this to be a fun experience.  We really enjoyed our visit.  It was a perfect way to practice our photography skills too.

Binuatan Creation Handiloom Weaving: Our Puerto Princesa City Tour (Urban Tour) Fifth Stop

Weaving shops were not new to us.  But, we still wanted to see how crafty Binuatan Creation Handiloom Weaving is.

binuatan creation handiloom weaving
We were the only ones stopping by that time so we went on ahead.

binuatan creation handiloom weaving
This gives a brief about the place and their products.

The work area is open for public viewing.

We observed ate as she was making one.

This ate was faster.  She then let me try... It's not as easy as it looks.  You need to pull it hard so it hard which I found difficult to execute which such precision and speed.

Sta. Monica Ranch: Our Puerto Princesa City Tour (Urban Tour) Ninth Stop

I don't recall ever going to a ranch so I was quite excited to go to Sta. Monica Ranch.

This structure looks similar to a place I've been in Tagaytay when I was young but I can't seem to recall where.

They have some activities to offer like the:
  • Palawan Rancho Zip Line Adventure - 500 php
  • Horse Back Riding - 50 php
  • Trampoline - 35 php
I was expecting a ranch to have a lot of horses but we only spotted two.

The Trampoline looked unenticing to try with lots of leaves and no one trying it.

Knowing that I love zip lines, Kurt was encouraging me to try this one.  I told him it wasn't enough to even tickle my nerves.

Puerto Princesa Tiangge Tiangge: Our Puerto Princesa City Tour (Urban Tour) Fourth Stop

The Puerto Princesa Tiangge Tiangge was barely open when we arrived.  Our tricycle driver Jeremy tells us that this is the place to purchase souvenirs.

Although it's a huge commercial space, there were vacant stalls too.  We can't help but notice that there's a Bodato Burger there too because they have a branch at Market Market in Manila and we've tried them there.  We loved their Mushroom Burger with Cheese.

Travel Tripster Kurt and I split up so I really didn't know what he purchased. I got some shell keychains for my friends.  It was difficult to haggle since they seem to have a standard pricing.

The indoor air-conditioned area sold items at a higher price.  But, items like pearls and other accessories were more organized in terms of display.

I bought some of the 3 for 100 goodies and my family didn't like any of them so I don't recommend them.  Some of the items are not really sourced from Puerto Princesa anyway.  But, the cashew nuts I'd recommend.

I think Kurt was observing which I was buying and saw me return the Durian Chips from Davao because I found it overpriced.  When we got back to Manila, he actually gave me a back of goodies which included that Durian Chips.  I have to admit, I was a bit touched.  I know he loves surprises but I didn't think he'd still do these stuff even though he was a bit angry with me.  But, I would've appreciate more if instead of these surprises, he just treated me right.  Yet, I have to accept this is the way he shows his affection which is clearly not the same as mine.

On our last day, Kurt insisted that we go back because he wanted to buy the canned pearls.  I later found one in the bag which he gave to me too.

The canned pearl gift set offered a fun experience in opening a shell and picking your own pearl which could be any of the color shown on the box.  I guess we're both a bit childish and love these little excitements.  I think this is cream colored which according to the box means happiness.

The Puerto Princesa Tiangge Tiangge is a great stop if you're looking for souvenirs like keychains (30 php to 100 php), pearls (20 php and above), T-shirts (100-150 php), canned pearls (100 php-150 php) and more.
